The National Law Review reports, Congress has introduced the Better Food Disclosure Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at strengthening the Food and Drug Administration’s oversight of food substances classified as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).
The legislation would require companies to notify the FDA when making GRAS determinations and direct the agency to maintain a public database of all such substances. Lawmakers say the measure is designed to improve transparency and ensure greater accountability in the use of food additives and ingredients.
For businesses in the food manufacturing and processing sectors, the bill could increase compliance requirements, calling for more detailed reporting and documentation. However, it also presents an opportunity for companies to demonstrate a stronger commitment to food safety and consumer trust through greater transparency.
