Google Meet Adds Real-Time AI Translation

Google is rolling out real-time speech translation in Google Meet, a new feature designed to remove language barriers during virtual meetings. Using recent advances in generative AI, the system delivers spoken translations with only a brief delay, a sharp improvement from earlier methods that often left participants waiting 10 to 20 seconds for responses.

The translation tool currently supports English into French, German, Italian, and Portuguese, and more languages are expected in future updates. Users can enable it directly within their Google Meet settings at no additional cost under Google Workspace.

Google says the technology was developed in partnership with DeepMind researchers and linguists to ensure accuracy in real-world conditions, including varied accents and background noise. While some challenges remain—such as idiomatic phrases and tone—the company plans to continue refining the experience.

By embedding real-time translation into its video conferencing platform, Google is positioning Meet as a more inclusive and efficient option for organizations that work across borders, helping teams collaborate with greater ease and clarity.
