Wireless Spending Climbs as Businesses Turn to AI and IoT for Growth

Cisco reports that businesses are rapidly increasing their investment in wireless infrastructure as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and high-bandwidth applications reshape how organizations operate. According to a recent study from Cisco, four out of five organizations have increased wireless spending over the past five years, with most expecting budgets to continue rising in the years ahead.

This surge reflects a broader shift: wireless networks are no longer just operational tools, but strategic assets that drive measurable business outcomes. Companies that invest in modern wireless infrastructure are seeing a “multiplier effect,” where a single upgrade leads to gains in productivity, customer engagement, and revenue. More than two-thirds of organizations report positive revenue impacts, while roughly three-quarters cite improved efficiency and customer experiences.

At the center of this trend is the growing demand from AI and IoT. AI-powered systems require fast, reliable connectivity to process data and automate decisions in real time, while IoT devices depend on constant network access to monitor, communicate, and optimize operations. Together, these technologies are placing increasing strain on legacy wireless systems, pushing businesses to modernize.

To meet these demands, organizations are upgrading to next-generation wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, with many planning deployments within the next year. These upgrades enable faster speeds, lower latency, and greater device capacity—capabilities essential for supporting AI-driven workflows and expanding IoT ecosystems.

At the same time, evolving workplace dynamics are accelerating investment. Hybrid work, bring-your-own-device environments, and cloud-based applications all require resilient, high-performance wireless networks. Businesses are recognizing that without a strong connectivity foundation, these modern operating models cannot function effectively.

However, the report also highlights a growing challenge: what it calls the “wireless AI paradox.” While AI is a key driver of wireless value, it also introduces complexity, security risks, and talent shortages. Organizations that successfully manage these challenges—through automation, modern security practices, and skilled personnel—are far more likely to achieve strong returns on their wireless investments.
