Nextgov reports a new bipartisan bill known as the AI for Mainstreet Act has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to help small businesses adopt artificial intelligence technologies. Sponsored by Rep. Mark Alford (R-Mo.) and Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.), the legislation seeks to ensure that Main Street enterprises aren’t left behind as larger corporations advance their AI capabilities.
The bill directs the Small Business Administration (SBA) to work through its Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) to provide small firms with information, guidance, and training on AI integration. These programs would help business owners use AI to plan for unexpected circumstances, protect data and intellectual property, improve cybersecurity, and comply with regulatory requirements.
Supporters say the initiative aims to close the technology gap between large and small enterprises by making AI more accessible, practical, and secure for local businesses. By equipping small business owners with the skills and knowledge to leverage AI effectively, lawmakers hope to boost innovation, resilience, and competitiveness across the U.S. economy.
The legislation reflects a growing bipartisan consensus that empowering small businesses with AI tools is essential for ensuring that Main Street keeps pace with technological transformation while safeguarding responsible and transparent use.
