Funeral Home Owner Sentenced to 20 Years for Fraud

A funeral home owner in Colorado has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for a shocking scheme that defrauded grieving families and abused the remains of at least 190 deceased individuals.

Jon M. Hallford, 45, owner of Return to Nature Funeral Home in Colorado Springs and Penrose, was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and ordered to pay over $1 million in restitution. His sentencing follows a multi-year investigation that revealed widespread mishandling of bodies and fraudulent financial activities.

Between 2019 and 2023, Hallford accepted more than $130,000 from families to cremate or bury their loved ones. Instead of providing these services, he allowed bodies to accumulate in various states of decay inside the funeral home facilities. In an effort to cover up his actions, Hallford blocked windows and doors, restricted access to the building, and provided false explanations for foul odors.

In many cases, he filed falsified death certificates with the State of Colorado and misrepresented the method of disposition. Some families received urns filled with dry concrete mix instead of the ashes of their loved ones, and on at least two occasions, the wrong body was delivered for burial.

Adding to the severity of the crimes, from March 2020 to March 2022, Hallford and his wife, Carie Hallford, defrauded the Small Business Administration (SBA) by submitting fraudulent loan applications to obtain COVID-19 relief funds. The couple received more than $880,000 through the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program, which they used to fund a lavish lifestyle rather than support their business.

“This defendant’s actions were not just fraudulent but deeply inhumane,” said U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly. “We hope this sentencing brings some measure of justice and peace to the many families affected.”

Authorities emphasized the importance of ethical practices in the funeral industry, stressing that such profound betrayals of trust can have lasting impacts on families and communities.

This case serves as a sobering reminder for all business owners about the critical importance of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.
