Supporting Small Businesses: First Federal’s Role During National Small Business Week

As National Small Business Week unfolds from May 4–10, First Federal Savings Bank is reaffirming its dedication to the small businesses that energize local communities across Indiana and Kentucky. In partnership with the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA), the bank is encouraging residents to shop locally and invest in the small businesses that create jobs, spark innovation, and give neighborhoods their distinctive character.

Small businesses aren’t just a part of the economy—they’re the heart of it. In the United States, they represent nearly all businesses and are responsible for a major portion of job creation and economic output. From 1995 through 2021, small businesses added over 17 million new jobs, accounting for two-thirds of all new employment opportunities during that time.

“Every dollar spent at a small business strengthens our communities,” said Courtney Schmitt, Vice President and Marketing Manager at First Federal Savings Bank. “We’re proud to provide the resources, funding, and personalized service that small business owners need to succeed.”

Community banks play a central role in supporting small businesses. In fact, more than 60% of small business loans under $1 million come from community-based financial institutions. This trusted relationship is grounded in local knowledge, accessibility, and a shared interest in the well-being of the community.

The ICBA emphasizes the long-term importance of this connection. By championing policies that help community banks thrive, the ICBA ensures that local entrepreneurs have access to capital and a strong financial support network.

Throughout the week, First Federal Savings Bank is offering educational resources and financial tools tailored specifically to the needs of small business owners. These efforts range from flexible lending programs to guidance on managing day-to-day finances—services designed to help local enterprises grow sustainably.

Events, workshops, and outreach initiatives during National Small Business Week also provide an opportunity to recognize the challenges small businesses face—from shifting market conditions to regulatory hurdles—and to celebrate their resilience and achievements.

By taking part in this national observance, First Federal Savings Bank reinforces its ongoing mission to empower local businesses and contribute to the economic vitality of the communities it serves. It’s not just about one week of celebration—it’s about year-round support and partnership.
