According to the Utah Department of Commerce, the State of Utah has filed a lawsuit against Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, for allegedly misrepresenting the safety of its platform and introducing experimental artificial intelligence technology without proper safeguards.
The lawsuit, filed by the Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Consumer Protection, accuses Snapchat of deceptive business practices that misled users and parents about the risks associated with its platform. State officials allege that Snapchat promoted its services as safe for young users while failing to disclose the potential dangers of its new AI features.
Utah officials argue that the company’s actions violated state consumer protection laws and failed to prioritize user safety. “This lawsuit is about protecting Utah’s children and families from deceptive practices,” said Margaret Busse, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Commerce. The state is seeking to hold Snapchat accountable and to require greater transparency in how it develops and deploys new technologies.
The legal action reflects Utah’s ongoing commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that technology companies operate responsibly. Officials say the case underscores the need for honesty and oversight as artificial intelligence tools become increasingly integrated into social media platforms used by young people.
