SBA Fights Politicized Debanking

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler has directed the agency’s network of more than 5,000 lenders to end “politicized and unlawful debanking” practices that deny financial services to borrowers based on their political, religious, or ideological beliefs. The move follows President Trump’s Executive Order on guaranteeing fair access to banking for all Americans.

“President Trump’s Executive Order Guaranteeing Fair Banking for All Americans does just what it says,” Loeffler stated in the announcement. “Look, for the last 15 years since the Obama Administration, your viewers might remember Operation Choke Point, when thousands of Americans, law-abiding Americans, were debanked. So with President Trump’s direction, the SBA today has sent a letter to our network of five thousand lenders across this country demanding that they stop debanking individuals and to document practices where they have done that, and if so, reinstate deserving borrowers and those seeking financial services.”

Loeffler also noted that these practices have “disproportionately impacted conservatives,” adding: “President Trump and his family were debanked, I was debanked, and it happened to thousands of Americans. We are going to get to the bottom of it and we are going to end it.”

The SBA’s directive requires lenders to review and reverse any instances where otherwise eligible borrowers were denied for ideological reasons. By mandating transparency and compliance, the agency emphasized that access to credit and financial services must be based on merit, not beliefs.
